ENCOURAGING THOUGHTS
Build In Harmony Throughout scripture, the Bible encourages us to love each other and build each other up. Loving one another is a command that Jesus gave a lot of focus to.
In John 15, He said:
This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. (John 15:12).
If we're honest though, loving others isn't always easy to do. Even when we get along well with those around us, we can sometimes get offended or unintentionally rub others the wrong way.
We might feel like we don't really fit in with those around us. Or that others don't fit well with us. But there's a chapter in Romans that can provide some inspiration on how to love others more effectively. Romans 14 talks about having grace for others who might see things differently than us. The chapter focuses on the debate of the believers at that time on whether to abstain from certain foods, and what to do if some feel convicted one way and others feel convicted another way. In verses 19–20a, it says, So then, let us aim for harmony in the church and try to build each other up. Don't tear apart the work of God over what you eat.
Now let's look at the words, harmony and build.
The Cambridge Dictionary defines harmony as: a pleasant musical sound made by different notes being played or sung at the same time.
To build means: to make something.
There are many music notes and many building materials. If we imagine all of God's people are like the different music notes or different building materials, it can help us to offer the love and grace of Christ to each other as we all live and serve God together.
You can't have harmony if everyone plays the exact same note. And most buildings are made from a variety of materials.
We are the body of Christ! Let's build each other up together in harmony in Jesus Christ.
