ENCOURAGING THOUGHTS
One Thing One thing. One word, one prayer, one action. How much power can one thing hold?
Things like reaching out to a friend or family member you haven't heard from in a while. Smiling at the person you pass at the grocery store. Helping with a small task around the house. It's easy to dismiss the power of one thing — especially if it's part of your every day.
Things that we say and do can seem mundane and unexceptional, but consider chapter 3 in the book of James. Verse 4 says: Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. (James 3:4)
In this verse, the writer is referring to the power of our words. The impact of words (or actions) is something that can be very hard to measure in the moment. But the impact is often much bigger than the word or action itself would seem to be.
How often do we experience a gentle nudging in our hearts to do or say something to someone else? If we listen, we'll be able to sense the Holy Spirit's prompting. Encourage him. Talk to her. And yet, we often ignore the leading because we don't understand the impact.
When we feel led to speak encouragement into someone's life, or just offer a helping hand or a listening ear, let's remember that the one thing that seems small and insignificant to us, might actually open the door for God to do something amazing in someone's life!
God is an expert at taking our "one thing" and making it multiply into blessings beyond measure.
