ENCOURAGING THOUGHTS
A servant heart When we think of the word servant, we often picture a maid or a butler. Going about the house, cleaning, cooking, and doting on the masters every whim. Or maybe a waiter is busying themselves serving a table, running back and forth with food and drinks in their hand.
When we hear the word servant, it doesn't necessarily bring out the best picture, or put the words "high class" in our minds. But the Bible speaks of us often as needing to be servants. "Anyone who wants to serve me must follow me, because my servants must be where I am." (John 12:26a)
When the Bible talks about servants in the New Testament it is often referring to a bond-servant. The Greek word for this is duolos in the New Testament. While it denotes total submission to a master, it often highlights a deep, willing devotion rather than forced labour.
We owe Jesus Christ our very life, He willingly sacrificed Himself that we might live eternally with Him. This is why we must become His bond-servants. This is not the same thing as a slave. This is willingly entering into serving Him and doing what He asks us to do. This is going where He wants us to go and working for the growth of His kingdom.
And with this type of servant hood, there comes a blessing. "And my Father will honour anyone who serves me". That word honour that is used here means to assign value to, to revere, and to respect. Our heavenly Father will honour us when we become His bond-servants.
We are not the lowly slaves that we can sometimes picture when we hear the word servant, we are loved, valued and respected when we become His servant. Live out your life as a bond-servant of Christ, because He honours those that do so.
