Connecting Lives, Building Faith, Releasing Destiny
ENCOURAGING THOUGHTS
Sitting At Jesus' Feet Do you remember as a kid, on long summer days, just lying down in the grass and looking up at the clouds?
Time seemed to pass much slower then. The days ahead stretched longer than the late afternoon shadows.
Now that we are grown, those long days seem more like dandelion seeds caught in a breeze. We rarely have time to sit down, much less watch the clouds like we used to.
Our lives are filled with various tasks and chores. We pack many good and often necessary things into our schedules. Work, meals, appointments, activities, etc.
Someone from the Bible who could probably sympathize with us a lot is Martha.
Her story is found in Luke, chapter 10, verses 38–42. The story starts out with Jesus and His disciples on their way to Jerusalem, and they come to a certain village (Bethany) where Martha, welcomes Him into her home.
The next verse describes Martha's sister, Mary, who sits at Jesus' feet, listening attentively to Him. But Martha is distracted by the big dinner she's preparing. She comes to Jesus and says, "Lord, doesn't it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work?" (vs. 40, NLT)
Many people have talked about this story, with the moral being that we should all try to be more like Mary than Martha. Taking the time to sit at Jesus' feet — and they are right.
And yet, I think most of the time we can actually relate better to Martha. If we look at the beginning of the story again, it says that Martha was the one who welcomed Jesus to her home. She made room for Jesus and his disciples, and wholeheartedly desired to serve him.
But in her desire to serve, she forgot to take time to actually be with Him. Her heart had all the best intentions, and yet she almost missed the opportunity to get to know Him.
In His response, Jesus gave Martha an invitation to set aside the many tasks she was doing and take that moment to connect with Him (see verses 41-42). While the Bible doesn't conclude the story, we can all take Jesus' invitation as a personal reminder to take moments out of our busy lives, to just sit with Him.
