Your Word is a Lamp
In the book of Psalms, the Word of God is described as a lamp and a light for us as we walk.

Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. (Psalm 119:105)

The word of God illuminates the path in front of us, so that we can see where we are walking.

But the interesting thing about lamps is that they don't illuminate a very large radius. They provide light for one area, one room, or one step at a time for our journey. We can see what we need to see around us and in front of us, but not much further.

Very often, we want to see all the way down the path before we take a single step. While God can and does sometimes show us future events in our lives, most of the time, He shows us one step at a time. 

We may ask why God would choose to do it this way. The simple answer is faith and fellowship. The Bible says that without faith it is impossible to please Him (Hebrews 11:6). And faith requires trust. Trust cannot be built if we know everything in advance, and as much as it would be nice to know at times, it would probably be too much for our human minds (and hearts) to carry at once. It's comforting to know that God chose to do it this way, so that every step we take isn't taken alone, but with Him.

Sometimes, it can feel like we are fully submerged in the darkness, but the Bible promises that if we draw near to God, He will draw near to us (James 4:8). And when we spend time in His word, He will show us what we need to see for our next step. Sometimes, it may be something so simple we might almost miss it.

God's Word carries light for each step that we take. And we can be confident that as we seek Him and spend time in His Word, we will have the light that we need to take the next step.
