ENCOURAGING THOUGHTS
Yesterday, Today, Forever There is a quote by Will Rogers that says "Never let yesterday take up too much of today."
It can be so easy to spend time thinking about our pasts. Reminiscing about meaningful moments and memories, or reliving moments that we wish we could change. Things that we wish we would've said or done differently, or perhaps things that we wish someone else had said or done differently.
Experience from our past can be a good teacher, and reflecting on past memories can help us to heal, gain wisdom, and grow for the future.
But it's also important to remember that our time thinking back on the past is meant to be a space that we pass through, not a place that we live permanently. Occasional glances in the rear view mirror are needed and helpful, but if you don't focus back on the road ahead quickly, you'll probably end up driving off the road. Every minute we spend wrapped up in our past is a minute that gets stolen from our future.
The apostle Paul talks about the importance of this in Philippians 3:13-14,
Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
There were a lot of things from Paul's past that I'm sure he was tempted to dwell on, but with the help of the Holy Spirit, he chose to focus on the new life he had be given, and not let the things from his past hold him back from experiencing the new things that God had in store.
Lord, thank you for the good memories in our past. Help us to learn wisdom from the events that we cannot change, and to lift our eyes and our hearts ahead to the new places that you want to lead us!
"But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead," Philippians 3:13b NIV
