ENCOURAGING THOUGHTS
... With Thanksgiving With so many needs in our world today, it may be difficult to feel thankful at times.
The early church must have had moments when they felt the same way. There was heavy persecution surrounding them at every turn, and the list of needs among the people would have been immense.
And yet the early disciples often encouraged each other to be thankful in all these circumstances.
Paul said in his letter to the Philippians,
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." (Philippians 4:6, NIV)
It's interesting to note that Paul didn't diminish the fact that the Philippian church had troubles. He didn't tell them to forget about their needs. He encouraged them to present their requests to God. Let's look at the last part of the verse again:
"...but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. (Emphasis added).
Paul encouraged the people to bring their needs before God, but he also showed them how to bring them.
With thanksgiving.
So often, we swing back and forth like a pendulum: either putting all our focus on solving our needs (making us anxious), or stuffing our needs down and being thankful.
But according to this verse, bringing our needs to God - with thankfulness in our hearts - is the very way that God wants us to handle our needs - in partnership with Him and trusting Him to lead us as we walk through them.
So, this Thanksgiving, remember that it's okay to talk to God about your needs, while at the same time praising and thanking Him for all He has already given!
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." Philippians 4:6 NIV
