ENCOURAGING THOUGHTS
A Cheerful Heart Is Good Medicine Sometimes, it's hard to be cheerful. When constant stress from family, finances, health, and so on looms over us, it can be hard to see past the struggles. Unfortunately, stress and challenges do not take a vacation when we'd like them to.
We often think that if things could just settle down a bit, then we would be happy. Once that problem is solved ... Once the finances come in... Once we change jobs, become less busy, or whatever else we are facing subsides, then we'll finally work on being happy.
But deep down we know that happiness isn't a place we arrive at. It's a lifestyle we choose to develop in the middle of the storms and trials of life. Joy and a cheerful heart are keys that allow us to stay steady in our faith, even when things appear to be crumbling around us.
The Bible says it's what keeps us from getting crushed underneath all of the weight of life.
In Proverbs 17:22, it says,
A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones. (NIV)
The Message translation says it this way:
A cheerful disposition is good for your health; gloom and doom leave you bone tired. (Proverbs 17:22, Msg)
Research confirms this. There have been multiple studies that suggest that happiness is linked to lower heart rate and blood pressure, improved immune function, and greater resistance to stress and disease. Developing a lifestyle of happiness may also contribute to a longer life span, better resilience, and enhanced creativity.
Father, help us to cultivate a lifestyle of faith and a cheerful heart this summer! And give us wisdom as we navigate the challenges of life that surround us.
"A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones." Proverbs 17:22 (NIV)
