ENCOURAGING THOUGHTS
I Will Give You Rest We're officially in the autumn season and settling into our various routines. For some of us, the routine is familiar and comforting. For others, we have a whole new routine that we are still trying to find our footing in. Regardless of what your routine looks like, most, (if not all) of us will experience some weariness as we transition into the fall and winter seasons. New school and work deadlines along with weekly activities, shorter days, and cooler weather combine to create a drain on our natural energy and motivation.
Although we may try to downplay the weariness we feel, it's important to remember that God takes weariness and rest very seriously in His Word.
In fact, from the very beginning, God showed us the importance of rest when He created the world in six days and then rested on the seventh:
And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when he rested from all his work of creation. (Gen. 2:3 NLT)
Why did God rest on the seventh day? He has all the power and strength in the whole universe inside of Him. It's limitless! And yet, He decided rest was important and made it a priority, even including it in the 10 Commandments (Exodus 20:8-12).
In the New Testament, Jesus invites us to find rest by coming to Him:
"Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light." (Matthew 11:28-30)
Jesus doesn't ignore or downplay human weariness. In fact, He acknowledges it as a normal part of being human. Then, He invites us to come to Him and to take on His burden instead.
If Jesus prioritizes rest, then we should as well. When we feel weary, let's take Jesus up on His invitation. As we draw near to Him, He has all the rest that we need!
