ENCOURAGING THOUGHTS
Remember That? Did you ever play memory card games as a kid? The one with a bunch of cards that had different pictures on them? Each picture card had another matching card laid out somewhere on the table. But all the cards were placed face down, so you couldn't tell where the matching cards were.
In the game, players would take turns, turning over two cards of their choice. If the cards matched, the person that turned them over got to keep them. If they didn't match, they were turned back over. It was important to really try to remember all the cards as they were revealed, so that on your turn, you could get a matching set!
As kids, we learned many games and ways to remember information. We had school quizzes, Sunday school memory verses, and memory games to play just for fun! But as we got older, most of us stopped memorizing bible verses and spent more time remembering our schedules and grocery lists. We could take a lesson from the Israelites. In Bible times, the people of God prioritized speaking about the acts of God and verbally passing down everything that God had done for them. This was very important to them, so that they wouldn't forget what God had done.
But there's more to it than that. Remembering what God did wasn't just to keep an accurate record of history — it helped the Israelites to remember the love and character of God towards them; and also kept reminding them of their identity in God, and how much He loved them and desired to lead them.
Take a read through Psalm 78 & Psalm 105. They are filled with recounting all the amazing, miraculous things that God did for His people.
As you read about the amazing acts of God written in those verses, try making your own list of everything God has done for you in the last several years, or as far back as you can remember! Afterward, pass it down to the next generation so that they can see the amazing things that God continues to do in and for His people!
