ENCOURAGING THOUGHTS
On Christ The Solid Rock, I Stand When we think about standing on a solid rock, we might think of hiking a mountain and standing atop a rocky cliff overlooking a grand view below us.
Or we might think of a large rock in the ocean that is surrounded by crashing waves, yet it remains stable and strong amongst the unstable elements surrounding it.
It's much easier to find your footing on a solid rock, rather than gravel, sand, or other things that shift and move with every step.
Many times, the Bible uses the image of a solid rock to show us how Christ is our place of stability and safety in life. Psalm 62:6-7 says, he only is my rock and salvation; my fortress; I shall not be shaken (ESV).
When we look for stability and security for our lives outside of Christ (i.e. in ourselves, in other people, or in material things), we will find ourselves slipping. We will be unable to find a solid footing, because those things alone cannot hold us. They do not carry the power to save us. But Christ has no shortage of strength and power to hold us AND everything around us!
There is a well-known hymn that was written by a man named Edward Mote in 1834, titled "My Hope Is Built On Nothing Less". The beautiful refrain states:
On Christ the solid rock I stand All other ground is sinking sand All other ground is sinking sand
Make Christ the solid rock that you stand on today. All other ground truly is sinking sand.
