ENCOURAGING THOUGHTS

Clear the Rocks, Water The Seeds
As spring makes its gradual entrance into Southern Alberta, one question that comes up a lot this time of year concerns soil moisture.  Will there be enough moisture in the ground for crops to grow and thrive this year?

Well-cultivated soil and well-timed planting and watering are crucial ingredients for a good crop.

The Bible talks a lot about planting in the Parable of the Sower. This story is told in three out of the four gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke). In each of these, Jesus details the story of the farmer that sowed seed into various types of soil.

Last week, we looked at what hindered the seed that was planted among thorns (see Matt. 13:7).

Today, we're going to look at what happened to the seed that fell among rocks. (Matt. 13:5-6)

The writer describes this soil as shallow with underlying rock (NLT). The plants sprung up quickly, but because their roots couldn't go deep to reach the moisture, they wilted in the sun.

Too much rock in the soil limited the amount of moisture the soil could hold. And it affected everything that tried to grow there.

Similar to the rocky ground in this parable, if there are hard places in our hearts, it will be difficult for the seeds that God desires to plant in us to grow and develop. Hardness in our hearts can come from many things, including hurts, offenses, unbelief, and unforgiveness.

These things take up the space in our hearts much like the rocks take up the space of soil and moisture for the plants in the parable.

Let's take time this week to ask the Lord if there are any "rocks" in the soil of our hearts that He wants us to deal with. Then, with the help of the Holy Spirit, we can heal those places, and make more room for the good seed within us to grow!

"Other seed fell among rocks. It began to grow, but the plant soon wilted and died for lack of moisture."
